『Helpless』(96)で長編映画デビュー。
『EUREKA ユリイカ』(00)が第53回カンヌ国際映画祭に出品され、国際批評家連盟賞とエキュメニック賞をW受賞。
以降も『月の砂漠』(01)がカンヌ国際映画祭、『私立探偵濱マイク・名前のない森』(02)がベルリン国際映画祭、『エリ・エリ・レマ・サバクタニ』(05)がカンヌ国際映画祭“ある視点”部門、『こおろぎ』(06)『サッド ヴァケイション』(07)が2年連続でヴェネチア国際映画祭オリゾンティ部門に出品された。
2011年、4年ぶりの作品『東京公園』がロカルノ国際映画祭で金豹賞(グランプリ)審査員特別賞を受賞。
自作の音楽も多く作曲(山田勳生との共作)している。 小説家としては、01年に自作のノベライズ小説『ユリイカ』で第14回三島由起夫賞を受賞、その後も著作多数。
また舞台演出にも進出、11年に「グレンキャリー・グレン・ロス」と「おやすみ、かあさん」を上演した。

In 1996, Shinji Aoyama made his feature film debut entitled Helpless. His film Eureka, a drama set in rural Kyushu dealing with the traumatic experiences of three different people, was exhibited at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and won two awards. Several other feature film works of Aoyama’s have also been exhibited at The Cannes Film Festival including Desert Moon in 2001 and My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken me? The latter having been screened in the Un Certain Regard section in 2005. His short film Mike Yokohama: A Forest with No Name was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival while his feature films Crickets (2006) and Sad Vacation (2007) debuted in the Orizzonti section at the Venice International Film Festival for two consecutive years, respectively.
In 2011, after a four-year intermission period from directing, Aoyama’s film Tokyo Park was showcased at the 64th Locarno International Film Festival and was awarded a special Golden Leopard in Honor of his career. He also collaborated with composer Isao Yamada to compose many original scores for the film.
As a novelist, Aoyama has written a novelized version of Eureka, winning the 14th annual Yukio Mishima Prize for his work, and has since then written many other literary works. In 2011, Aoyama began play and stage production works which included adapted versions of Glengarry Glen Ross as well as ‘Night, Mother.
